Ecuador vs Argentina: World Cup 2018 Qualifying Live Stream 5/5 (2)

Lionel Messi and co. are dangerously close to failing to qualify for the first time since 1970

Argentina face a gruelling trip to Ecuador as they bid to save their World Cup qualification campaign from the brink of disaster.

Despite boasting some of the world’s best attacking talent, a lack of goals has seen Argentina struggle in the South American group and they currently lie in sixth place with only the top four gaining automatic plane tickets to Russia next year.

Their final qualifier will be played in the brutal altitude of Quito, with only a win an option as anything less would leave them looking at the real possibility of not even making the play-off and missing out altogether.

Ecuador are out of the running for a place in next year’s tournament, but shocked La Albiceleste with a 2-0 win in the opening round of qualifying fixtures and will fancy teir chances of piling more heartache on the two-time world champions.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the huge World Cup qualifier…

When is the game?

It’s a late start in Quito, with the match kicking off at 12.30am on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

Where can I watch it?

You can’t, at least not on a television.

There is a live streaming option for UK viewers though, with bet365 showing the match on their website.

Argentina team news

Boss Jorge Sampaoli will have to try and address his side’s lack of goals without Sergio Aguero, with the Manchester City hotshot recovering from broken ribs sustained in a car accident in Amsterdam two weeks ago.

Sampaoli turned to Boca Juniors star Dario Benedetto to deliver the goals against Peru on Thursday, but after drawing a blank he could revert to playing Paulo Dybala or Mauro Icardi alongside Lionel Messi up frontwith Juventus hitman Gonzalo Higuain dropped from the squad.

Benfica winger Eduardo Salvio had been pushing for a start but picked up a knock in training and is now a doubt, meaning Alejandro Gomez could keep his place in the side despite disappointing against fourth-placed Peru.

Predicted lineups

Ecuador (4-4-2): Banguera; Velasco, Aimar, Arboleda, Ramirez; Renato Ibarra, Intriago, Cevallos, Romario Ibarra; E.Valencia, Ordonez

Argentina (4-1-3-2): Romero; Mercado, Otamendi, Mascherano, Acuna; Biglia; Salvio, Perez, Di Maria; Dybala, Messi

Ecuador vs. Argentina Live 5/5 (2)

Argentina and Lionel Messi could be missing from the FIFA World Cup 2018 finals unless they gain a positive result against Ecuador in CONMEBOL qualification on Tuesday.

The Argentinians currently lie in sixth, outside of the automatic qualification positions and the fifth-placed play-off berth.

The visitors have a poor record on the road against Ecuador but need a victory to sustain their ambitions of a trip to Russia next summer or at least better the results of Chile, Colombia and Peru.

Chile travel to Brazil for their last match, as Peru host Colombia.

Here is how you can watch the final qualifier from South America:

Preview

A World Cup finals without the presence of Messi seems preposterous, but there is a real chance the Barcelona legend will not feature in Russia next summer.

Argentina have clumsily rumbled through qualification in South America, collecting 25 points compared to Brazil’s haul of 38.

Scoring goals has been the central issue for Messi and Co., and a goal difference of plus one has placed Argentina on the brink of disaster.

Six nations remain in the mix for a chance to make it to the finals, but Ecuador have already been eliminated after just falling short of the mark.

However, they did avoid defeat in 10 of their qualification matches and will be no pushover for their illustrious and desperate opponents.

The home venue of Quito is at high altitude, and Argentina have suffered there in the past, with little oxygen to sustain an empowered display.

Argentina have lost two of their past three CONMEBOL matches in the capital city, with Ecuador taking advantage of the climate and geography.

The visitors will hope the hosts will be disinterested in a tie that means nothing to them in technical terms, but Ecuador will not lie down with the opportunity to embarrass and humble Argentina. A victory would be remembered for generations to come.

Tim Vickery of The Sun wrote the Argentinians are being punished for their reliance on Messi’s magic and productivity, as others fail to inspire:

Argentina have lacked a top class centre back, for example, since the retirement of Roberto Ayala a decade ago – and since then they have rarely looked like a fully coherent team.

Instead, they have been dependent on flashes of individual genius, mostly from Messi.

The team that hauled itself to the World Cup final three years ago was heavily reliant on the inspiration of Messi and the grit of Javier Mascherano.

One of the problems of this campaign is that Messi has missed 8 matches – in which Argentina managed just 7 points.

Another, a constant in recent times, has been the lack of defensive pace. And the biggest problem of all has been the nerves that can hit a traditional giant when it is in danger of failing so badly.

Argentina have played the last few matches as if they been running in treacle.”

In terms of their life cycle, the current Argentina team are on the edge of transition, and it will be no surprise to see Messi hang up his international boots if the side fail to qualify.

The wizard has struggled to impact his nation at the highest level, while constantly achieving incredible feats with Barca in La Liga and Europe.

Current boss Jorge Sampaoli has a quality record through his managerial career, but the issues faced by his squad are deeper than the length of his tenure.

Ecuador will be desperate to spoil the party on Tuesday night, and Argentina will need a huge slice of luck as they look at results from other games to aid their quest.

Chile have a difficult trip to Brazil, but the group winners have nothing to play for after securing their usual spot at the finals.

Brazil vs Chile Match Preview

Brazil has been the only team in the CONMEBOL region that has been above and beyond the competition. The five-time World Cup champions are currently in first place with 38 points, 10 points above second-place Uruguay and a massive goal differential of 27.

Neymar has obviously been a standout with six goals but a surprising contributor to this team has been Paulinho with five goals and solid work from the midfield. Tite’s men are coming off a disappointing scoreless draw against Bolivia but should pull off a more impressive performance in this game in front of the home crowd.

Chile has been a solid team in this CONMEBOL region, currently third with 26 points. A draw in this game could secure a World Cup spot or a fifth-place finish but a win would be a much safer option with the way the other games are lined up. La Roja is not in great form, having won only one of its last three games, this includes losses against Paraguay and Bolivia in this stint.

Alexis Sanchez has not been in great form but the Arsenal star did score a goal in Chile’s last game against Ecuador and his performance will be a key to this game and the final score. The match should be a very intense encounter with the importance of the three points for the visiting side.

Brazil vS Chile Live 5/5 (4)

Chile have saved the most difficult task for last in their 2018 World Cup qualification campaign and travel on Wednesday to face Brazil, who sit atop the CONMEBOL standings and already have a place in the finals.

La Roja sit third in the CONMEBOL table with one game left in qualifying but could finish anywhere between second and seventh, with only four points between the two places as things stand. Football writer Samuel Jay C posted the latest standings following the most recent set of South American results:

Brazil are unbeaten in their past four games and will not move from the CONMEBOL summit, where they boast a 10-point cushion, although manager Tite hasn’t shown signs of restricting his squad selection as a result.

The 2014 World Cup runners-up became the first team other than hosts Russia to qualify for next year’s tournament in March. Chile are guaranteed automatic qualification with a win, but anything else could see them fighting for the fourth-place play-off spot—or worse.

Preview

Although it was some seven months ago that Brazil booked their place in next year’s World Cup finals, it’s not in Tite’s style to allow his players to take their foot off the pedal, and recent results have shown that lethal stride.

Chile’s upcoming hosts have suffered three losses in qualifying—three fewer than any other CONMEBOL team—and La Roja’s record of three defeats in their past four outings doesn’t look nearly as intimidating.

However, what’s essential is that Chile ended a recent three-loss streak with a 2-1 victory over Ecuador on Friday, and hero Alexis Sanchez will again be vital to their hopes of toppling Brazil as he was in Santiago, via Goal:

Brazil find themselves in the advantageous position of not only being able to rest easy heading into their last qualifier—having already secured a World Cup place—but also having the ability to knock out a fierce rival.

Argentina are sixth after 17 matches and face the prospect of failing to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1970. Blogger Brazil Stats recently mapped out how close the margins are between La Albiceleste and some of their closer CONMEBOL peers:

It’s unsurprising Tite hasn’t permitted his players a moment of relaxation given the team was in some disarray when he took over in June 2016, with complacency perhaps one of their greater weaknesses.

While the Selecao have their fair share of superstars such as Neymar and Gabriel Jesus, the manager has made an effort to rotate his squad, and FourFourTwo‘s Jack Lang highlighted one method by which his men are kept on their toes:

It’s for that reason Chile will struggle in Sao Paulo. Had they come up against a different manager or system showing preference to rest their greater assets, a draw or even a shock away win could be feasible.

Chile have disappointed away from home in qualifying, however, and failed to score in their other two trips against CONMEBOL’s current top four (Uruguay and Colombia), a streak they’ll find hard to break at Allianz Parque.

Netherlands vS Sweden 5/5 (2)

This Tuesday, October 10, 2017 (11:45 AM Pacific) the Netherlands will host Sweden at the Amsterdam Arena for a match in the UEFA 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Both teams are still seeking a possible first or second-place finish and should provide an entertaining game.

How to Watch the Netherlands vs Sweden

The Netherlands vs Sweden match will be broadcast this Tuesday, October 10 at 11:45 AM Pacific:
TV Schedule: ESPN 3, ESPN Deportes
Watch Live Online: Sling TV (Watch 7 Days Free)

Netherlands vs Sweden Match Preview

The Netherlands are not technically eliminated from a chance at a spot in the next World Cup but realistically cannot get a second-place finish even with a win from this game. Holland is currently third in Group A with 16 points and a goal differential of 7 while Sweden is in second with 19 points and a goal differential of 19. It seems inevitable that Oranje will miss its first World Cup since 2002 and quality players like Arjen Robben, Virgil van Dijk and Memphis Depay will not be seen next year in Russia.

Some blunders that seriously hurt the Netherlands in these qualifiers include two losses against France and a loss against Bulgaria. This is a very winnable game for Dick Advocaat’s side but it is highly unlikely that the win will cover the massive difference in goal differential to Sweden.

Sweden has been a surprisingly great team in these qualifiers still finding success after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s retirement from international play. Players like Marcus Berg, who has eight goals in these qualifiers and Emil Forsberg, who has four goals in this competition have attributed a great deal to Sweden’s success. The Nordic side has outscored its opponents 12-0 in its last two games, which has turned out to be a huge reason why the Blue-Yellow is practically guaranteed a first or second-place finish. This should be a very intense match and both teams will look for the three points, Sweden should be especially motivated since it can still obtain a first-place finish in Group A if France cannot defeat Belarus.

LUXEMBOURG vS BULGARIA 5/5 (2)

France could qualify from Europe’s Group A for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Saturday if things go their way, but they’ll have to beat Bulgaria in Sofia and hope for an upset in one of the other matches.

Les Bleus currently lead Sweden by one point and the Netherlands by four―if the Swedes suffer an unlikely loss at home against Luxembourg, France can qualify with a win.

The more likely scenario sees Les Bleus clinch their spot on the final matchday against Belarus, when the Swedes play the Netherlands. Either way, beating Bulgaria is crucial to the team qualifying.

Preview

As shared by sports writer Mohammed Ali, France will make the trip to Bulgaria without Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, highlighting their incredible depth:

Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona also isn’t in the squad due to injury, but with the likes of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, there’s plenty of firepower for Les Bleus.

Bulgaria have already conceded 17 goals in qualifying, tied with Luxembourg for the most in Group A. The team has an outside chance at qualifying and will visit football minnows Luxembourg on the final matchday, but they’ll need a lot of things to go their way just to make the play-offs.

Group A has been tight so far, and Les Bleus’ shock draw against Luxembourg on the previous matchday has set up an exciting finale. Sweden have bounced back after their unexpected loss in Bulgaria, and the Netherlands are still very much alive, despite their horrendous form.

The Dutch and Swedes’ meeting on the final matchday is a major advantage for France moving forward―at least one of the two will drop points. But for now, Les Bleus have to focus on themselves and not look past the initial hurdle in Sofia.

Bulgaria beat Sweden at home in a wild affair and also kept the three points in Sofia against the Netherlands. Luxembourg came close to earning a draw on the opening matchday, but all in all, the Bulgarians have been good at home.

Georgi Kostadinov has been the main danger man with three goals in this qualifying cycle, and Ivelin Popov is the most experienced forward in the squad. Keeping a close eye on those two will be key, especially now that Aleksandar Tonev has dropped out of the selection with injury concerns.

Prediction: Bulgaria’s solid home form continues, and Group A goes down to the final matchday. Bulgaria 1-1 France
